Agreed--mysterious traffic spikes are certainly no fun to deal with, and since the engines traffic numbers don't update in real time a merchant can easily exceed their daily spend by 3-4x as much on a given day no matter how closely they monitor their campaigns.

Great post.

If you do have a configurable budget limit, surely you can "test the waters" by starting small and increasing it as needed?

Having configurable daily limits hurts the CSE quality for visitors because they will often not see interesting merchants. It also makes it more interesting for the competition to generate fraudulent clicks for a merchant to remove him from the listing.
